Collection Description
This debut collection by Swanetta Hunt is a compelling crossroad of personal narrative and cultural observation. Drawing inspiration from her transition between the Midwest and New York City, Hunt weaves together two distinct yet unexpectedly parallel style languages: the casual pragmatism of Midwestern dress and the deliberate, layered cool of New York streetwear.
The collection features three key looks that capture this duality:
- A denim 16-piece corset and gold brocade wide-leg pant, balancing minimalism with bold textile choice—casual but elevated.
- A white ruched maxi dress with a sculptural, oversized collar, merging femininity with structure and referencing both street style’s play on proportion and classic eveningwear codes.
- A black floral hoodie dress, oversized and soft-edged, nods to the comfort-driven dressing of both regions, while the florals subtly reference domestic familiarity with a contemporary twist.
Textiles range from brocade to cotton jersey to satin, showcasing a tactile exploration of contrast—luxury versus comfort, tailored versus draped. The silhouettes play with shape, particularly in the exaggerated collar and voluminous sleeves, signaling an early affinity for sculptural design.
What makes this collection stand out is its honesty—the garments feel rooted in lived experience but styled with a designer’s eye for contrast and tension. It’s not about spectacle, but about observing people, their daily choices, and translating that into garments that feel both personal and editorial.
